Leading Enterprise Architecture Value™

EA Bootcamp

INTRODUCTION

The EA Bootcamp course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to individuals entering an architecture-related role and/or needing a basic understanding of enterprise architecture (EA) concepts.

Existing EA courses focus on a single aspect of EA and assume that delegates have some experience in the field. The EA Bootcamp however, is aimed at beginners and addresses a span of EA concepts and theories.

Companies who have already adopted TOGAF® will find this course valuable as part of an induction programme for new recruits and/or a refresher to current employees needing to brush-up on the principles of EA and modelling.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This four-day course covers the EA fundamentals so as to equip delegates with the foundational knowledge needed to participate in EA initiatives. The course also serves as a basis for future training in the field.

The EA Bootcamp is divided into three parts.

Part 1 introduces and defines the concept of enterprise architecture, and positions it within the organisational context. It examines the problems that we are trying to solve with EA and shows how EA provides business with an enhanced return on its IT investments.

Part 2 focuses on EA methodology. It covers the official TOGAF® 9 Foundation training curriculum that includes an overview of the TOGAF® 9 framework and instruction on how to apply it in support of the design and implementation of EA.

Delegates have the option of registering for The Open Group TOGAF® 9 Foundation exam after completing this part of the course.

Part 3 allows delegates to practically apply their knowledge through the introduction of ArchiMate™, The Open Group's open and independent modelling language for EA. Delegates use a case study to build entry-level business, application and technology architectures using ArchiMate™ so as to put into practice the concepts they learn in the first three days of the course.

Delegates receive a Starter Kit of information resources and tools (including a TOGAF® 9 pocket book, an ArchiMate™ 1.0 book, and a Modelling Tool) to assist them in applying their learning in the work environment. In addition, delegates receive a voucher for the TOGAF® 9 Foundation (Level 1) exam, so that, on passing the exam they may go on to complete the TOGAF® 9 Certified (Level 2) course for full TOGAF™ 9 certification.

COURSE OUTCOMES

On completing this course, delegates will know how to position EA within their organisations and understand the value of following an architectural approach. Delegates will also be familiar with the Architecture Development Method; Content Framework and Capability Framework that TOGAF™ 9 provides, and know how TOGAF™ 9 is used as the basis for creating an organisation's EA.

In addition, delegates will have practical experience designing various architectures based on their understanding of a business scenario.

The knowledge acquired on this course will equip delegates to function within an EA environment.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR

The course instructors have architecture experience both from consulting and corporate view-points and are thus familiar with many real-world challenges.

Training News

The Open Group has released ArchiMate® 2.0, the latest version of the open and independent modeling language for Enterprise Architecture. ArchiMate® 2.0 is now more closely aligned with TOGAF® and enables the creation of fully integrated models of an organization's Enterprise Architecture, the motivation behind it, and the programs, projects and migration paths to implement it.

The TOGAF® 9 People Certification program has been designed to accommodate maintenance updates (such as TOGAF® 9.1) to the TOGAF® 9 specification. Thus, the certification remains as “TOGAF® 9 Foundation” and “TOGAF 9 Certified”, and individuals who are currently certified in the TOGAF® 9 People Certification program remain certified.

TOGAF® 9.1 was released on 1 December 2011. It contains a set of corrections to address the feedback submitted since the introduction of TOGAF® 9 in 2009. This new version has addressed over 400 of the comments received, resulting in over 450 changes to the standard.
The changes are upwards compatible adding clarification, consistency and additional detail where needed. Some of the most significant updates include:

Real IRM will be providing TOGAF® 9 training in Cape Town in August 2011. The course is open to the public and promises an interactive training experience that combines formal training with informal class discussion.

Understanding the data structures within an organisation is the key to successful data management. This understanding is reached by modelling the various data structures using the industry standard notations. Real IRM’s Data Modelling Foundation course addresses this by tackling both relational operational databases and dimensional analytical cubes.

South Africa is ranked fifth in the world when it comes to TOGAF® 9 certification numbers. According to The Open Group, at the beginning of June there were already 7,200 individuals certified from more than 50 countries worldwide. Following on the heels of the UK, Netherlands, USA and Australia, South Africa has 5.5% of all these certified individuals.

In South Africa, the first TOGAF® course was presented by Real IRM in 2006. Since then the company has certified hundreds of individuals both locally and abroad, and continues to present public and in-house courses each month.

A certification provides assurance that individuals have the expertise and experience required to get the job done. The Open Group offers three certifications for practitioners; TOGAF® Certification, IT Architecture Certification (ITAC) and IT Specialist Certification (ITSC).

Training Articles

Real IRM, a leading enterprise architecture specialist, is launching the first ArchiMate 1.0 training course in South Africa in July.

Real IRM will offer ArchiMate training locally and internationally alongside its TOGAFTM (The Open Group Architecture Framework) training and certification. The training will be presented in the form of instructor-led, public and client-specific courses.

The key to a career as an enterprise architect is TOGAF®

Choosing a career as an enterprise architect can be the most important decision in a young person's life. It opens many doors, locally and internationally, and ensures that they are well rounded in their general approach to a wide range of business and IT issues. It challenges them to take the step up in terms of strategic thinking.

The growing demand for TOGAF® version 9 and its certification program is indicative of the accelerating global adoption of the standard.

Real IRM, a leading enterprise architecture (EA) specialist, is launching the new EA Bootcamp training course in Johannesburg, in October.

The EA Bootcamp course offers a solid foundation to individuals beginning their careers in the field of enterprise architecture. This four-day course focuses on basic EA concepts with the aim of equipping delegates with the knowledge needed to start participating in EA initiatives.
